At around age 40, my father went to college (my mother literally made him do so) for the first time in his life, to study engineering. Before then, he always worked for a single national chain of men's clothing stores called Howard Clothes. He was hired in NY as a stockboy as a teenager, then in 1952 moved to Syracuse to be the credit manager of that region, then became an assistant manager and then manager of successively larger stores.
